Backpacking? Time to start Parking

Backpacking, Get the groove on!
Backpacking, Get the groove on!
Its that time of the year when everyone wants to go Backpacking, allowable places on your mind. Austrialia in many people's mind.

Both old, young and young at heart, wish to evaluate their time, get packing and off they go. The School year has ended, the time for adventure is now.

Now the Spirit of backpackianism has caught up with me, I constantly have Australia on my mind.

I have the basic things I think I need, most Importantly, I have my head, my brain, my laptop, my camera, my blackberry phone, my iPad and an iphone intact.

I also have some clothes, but lack what it takes to get the gears in order, because I have never backpacked before. So am calling on all backpacking entusiasts, backpacking scholars, backpacking mentors, backpacking fans and all Backpackers to help a-would-be Backpacker out.

  • What do I require to have a safe backpacking trip?
  • Apart from Australia, where are the best hotspot for Backpacking?
  • Any tips on safety while Backpacking?

Thanks for your esteemed Backpacking tips.

Train derelment get passengers distracked

Train on Track
Train on Track
This morning on my sojourn to the next world called work, I looked at my time and it was some mins to my train arrival

Rushing in great anticipation of the begining of what I have come to agree to be a normal day, I luckily made it to the train station as the next train was about pulling into the platform.

Like any antelope, I dashed through the crossing, and was fast enough to catch the train. With the mind of going down the platform for my "normal" coach, and having a time to treat my fingers to the daily blog, I was taken aback by the sight of people and the train coaches scrambling for space.

I had to cling to a small spot on my favourite last coach, but not on "my seat" but standing up. I wish I had enough energy to squeeze through and catch the seat space.

Train the Track
Train the Track
The reason the wonderful well mannered Train Driver gave for the shortness of space was because of a rail derailment at Drogheda train station.

Ohhh there goes my early morning routine, but I was determined to make sure that you - my esteemed readers does not miss a beat on the early morning blog.

So here it is, if you missed the beat, know that am stuck in any over 'bodied' train coach and am writing this blog post through my Blackberry. Lool no wonder Technology has replaced man's best friend.

Have you ever witnessed such a scramble for seat on a short train in a busy morning, get your fingers to the keyboard and give us a shout through the comment box.

My Love for Ireland wax stronger and stronger, because - not even a packed train can change their accommodating Spirit. Yes I am a witness, lets have your say.

My little two cents would be that the electronic notice boards should be used to let customers know that there is a problem before the train arrives at the station. This will help them make decisions on whether to join the squeezed train or wait for the next one.

LifeGemz: Food for thoughts
Food for thoughts
On a hot afternoon, with the sun angrily smiling down from the high orbital space, the humans down on Earth perspiring and yarning for something good, nice and cold to drink, eat or savour.

Its only left to the imagination to understand what must have been going through your head when you stumble into a very nice resturant looking round you see good looking faces, nice clothes, great scents oozing off their well shapped bodies. Shoes, clothes, belts, skirts to match with their smiles.

Alass your mind tells you that you have finally entered into a nice cool place, where the heat of the sun can never meet with you to shake your hands and smile at your face.

LifeGemz: A way to any man's heart
A way to any man's heart
A beautuful smiling figure approaches you to ursher you to a well decorated seat, pointing to the side for options of where to seat.

"Come seat near the end, its more beautiful with enough space to feed your eyes!"

Off to the seat beside the window you go, still wondering and waiting in anticipation of what next to come.

Now lets spare you the story of how you ordered your food and how the well manicured fingers delived them at your table, asked you if you needed any more service (still smiling) and gracefully walked away with a huge smile on her face.

NB: if you don't answer, that means you are a tips dodger. Loool

Digital Skills Shortage - The EU Challange

ICT Skill Shortage
ICT Skill shortage (confused?)
It has been reported that ONLY half of the European Labour Force have quality and sufficient Information Technology (IT) Skills. This shortage of relevant IT skills hampers many in their ability to find new jobs, change current Jobs or even start their own business.

According to the European Union's Annual "Digital Agenda Scoreboard", only about 43% of the EU population have a "confident" level skill in IT - (between Medium or High Internet Skills).

Thus almost half of the EU Labour force are not confident of themselves in the area of their Computer and/or Internet (Navigation/use) skills. About 25% of the ready workforce have no relevant IT Skills at all.

The reports also estimates that the ICT sector vacancies would reach a mind-blowing record number of 700,000 spaces by 2015.

This is therefore an urgent call to all relevant Authorities to act Now, so that school leavers and job seeker would be given the needed training to enable them compete with others in the ICT Industries.

Digital Agenda: Annual scoreboard confirms need for structural economic reform across Europe and surplus of ICT jobs; big trend towards Mobile Services and Technology

Worst Designed Websites of 2012

It amazes me sometimes when I see or visit most websites, some of which you can get lost in the confused state at which you may end up finding yourself.

Some you may be forced to call for help in order to run out of their websites. Now I ask myself, what is the purpose of having a website if you will end up confusing your website visitors?

The answer they say lies in the heart of the visitor in this case who is also the beholder. Yes am taking the old adage and transforming it. They say that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, so probably the Website Designer has an eye problem, so he might not even notice the beauty or maybe your Computer is having a nut out of place.

That said, I would like to ask you my Visitor (hopefully not Confused) to please nominate the Websites which you (truthfully) will would be crowned the Worst Designed Website 2012. Also it would be helpful if you give us a little note on why you think that the site should be in that category.

If your website is nominated, please hold on for Us, you will surely receive an Award from LifeGemz!!!!

Now lets get the hall set and relax as the music is cued....

Which websites do you think are the Worst designed Websites and why?

Fixing The Automated HR Software Hiring Process

These problems of eliminating skills and hiring Keyworded Skills are posing a grave danger to people with composite skills and experiences that seek employment.

Imagine a Researcher who works with one of the Companies employing these Human Resources Automated Software Hiring process decided to test if the complains he has been getting were true. A job vacancy was announced, and he fired up his CV and cover note and uploaded the Job application through the company's HR website.

He was VERY qualified for the Job, and also very good in writing CVs and Resume. After some days, he received an email that his Job application was unsuccessful because he does not have the skills that were required to do the job.

Now before you conclude, you will recall that this man is currently working in that Company and in same office, doing the same/more tasking job that was advertised in the Job Vacancy.

After a few days, as the Job vacancy was still advertised on the HR website, he decided to "specially" stuff the job description keywords in his CV and cover letter and after some days, he received a an email of his schedule for a face-to-face Job interview.

This goes to show the extent to which these Automated HR Software Hiring process has damaged the Workforce and its skill sets.

All is not lost; the problem would be on the willingness of potential Employers in reversing the trend on the use of these automated Software Hiring processes.

According to Mr Cappelli, Employers could "back off the strict requirement that applicants need to have previously done precisely the tasks needed for the vacant job" also they could "see if they could do the same with some training or ramp-up time."

That is not all. Employers could also work together with their Software Vendors to update or redo these HR Hiring Software programs to avoid its pickiness and "flags for personal consideration rather than discards an applicant who doesn't quite fit the specifics but might be able to do the job."

This would rather help solve this problem of Skilled Joblessness, and avoid the catastrophe of Keyword stuffing on Cvs and Cover Note, and also give potential Employers the required and most sought after qualified Skills and employees who put their personalities in their jobs with the sole aim of maximising the Company's lean resources.

So it's either we walk Towards a Robotic World where you can Get Hired and Fired by Software, Or probably (but not advisable to) start Parroting Keywords from the job description into your CV. Either way, you should get prepared for what the future holds, and be prepared to take the "Bull by the Horn".

Parroting Keywords in a job description

The infamous Automated HR Software Hiring Process has led to Applicants parroting all the necessary words or keywords in Job descriptions to enable them pass through the first phase of the Automated Software Hiring process, and it's a question of the World walking Towards a Robotic World, where you can Get Hired and Fired by Software.

This indeed is not a good sign to the economy, as it reduces the quality of Applicants who get hired for roles they know nothing of, but once they have the skills to Google the job specifications they may stand a chance of gaining employment.

The questions one may be forced to ask are:

  • If this is the future Company hiring techniques good for the skilled workforce?
  • Will this system of Automated Software Hiring be the best way to cut HR funding?
  • How long will this last until Companies realise that they are contributing to more Unemployed Unemployment?
  • Will this Automated Software Hiring Process lead to Brain Drain from the Countries?
  • How will this Brain Drain issue affect the Economy?
  • Where do we go from here……?

Just like everything in life, too much of anything is very bad. Moderation should be sort for or else one day, these software bots will turn around and eat up the database (lol).
This is also not a very good way to go, because it would be a great encouragement for Keyword surfing or keyword stuffing.

What then do we need to do to Fix the Problems of the HR Automated Hiring Software or are we sticking to walk Towards a Robotic World where you can Get Hired and Fired by Software?

The answer to All these is up to you.

Towards a Robotic World – Get Hired and Fired by Software

"For every story about an employer who can't find qualified applicants, there's a counterbalancing tale about an employer with ridiculous hiring requirements" these are the Words of Professor Cappelli, of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.

Mr Cappelli, a professor of Management and Human Resources opines that Computer Software has almost replaced Real Human Recruiters in most Companies, adding that "applicants rarely talk to anyone, even by email, during the hiring process."

Automated Hiring process is helping Companies save lots of money, but making it possible for "CV Floating" - a process by which applicants are "keywording" their Cvs and cover letters to enable them secure a passage through these automated HR Software Hiring processes.

The Advantages of Automated HR Hiring system aka Computer Software HR Sorting techniques cannot be over emphasised, as this:
  • Reduces the time in which it takes applicants to search and fill up Job applications.
  • Reduces the time it takes Recruiters to go through thousands of Job Applications.
  • Saves Cost for Companies.
  • Broadens the Pool of resources from which Companies can pick their applicants.

It has been argued that there are so many talents out there, but Employers are still crying that there are no REAL Qualified Applicants to fill their job vacancies.

The reasons are not far-fetched. Research has shown that these Automated HR Screening Software screens-out Applicants who do incorporate some particular keywords (which unfortunately the Companies are looking for).

This leaves a foul taste on many applicants mouth, and automatically brings up the question or suggestions that Keyword Parroting in CV and Cover Letters might be the way forward.
Does this then suggest that it is only when you look at the Job Description and note the highest occurring words/skills and use them to stuff your CV and Cover letter that you would be able to cross the hurdle of the Automated Software Hiring process?

Is parroting Keywords in a Job Description the way forward? Are we moving towards a Robotic world, where you can get Hired and Fired by Robots? You alone can answer this.

What then do we need to do to Fix the Problems of the HR Automated Hiring Software or walk Towards a Robotic World where you can Get Hired and Fired by Software?

What is a Sitemap (Site Map)?

In a layman's terms, Sitemap is a structured summary of all the pages, categories, Articles etc on your website. Thus it would be more wise to say that the Sitemap or XML Site Map or Sitemap file is file that contains all the Directory of ALL the Web pages that are present on your Blog or Website.

Analysing a Phishing Email

As a Continuation of the article on Bank Phishing Emails - Gens Online Maintenance, We want to take a critical look at the contents of the email, and analyse its contents and the actions behind the phishing email.

It would be noted that this is a definite case of  email phishing or phishing email. An analysis of the email structure, contents and some tips below will help you stay clear from phishing emails.

Useful Tips to help you stay Clear of Phishing Emails

  • Senders Email Address: If you notice the sender's address, it came from a website which has no business with the said bank. A quick DNS or Whois Look-up showed the following results:
  • Recipient's Email Address: The email address of the recipient (which is "supposed" to be YOU/I ) was simply  used as : Undisclosed  Recipients meaning that the message was sent to you as a "BCC" - Blind Carbon Copy, using a Mass e-mailer or a Mass email sender.
  • Email Greetings: If you Bank or  Financial Institution will ever communicate to/with your through email, your First and Surnames MUST be included in the email (as a Security measure) to enable you know that the email is from the Bank or Financial Institution.
  • Email Grammatical Structure: While psychologists have noticed that most people that fall for online scams do not "think about grammar or structure" of the emails or letter they receive, where their eyes and brain is attached to is on what to gain from such transactions.
It is to be noted that this email purported to come from a "Bank" asks (the "undisclosed recipient" who is being greeted as "Dear Customer" and not with their real names), for some key information from them.
This will involve you doing the following:
  • Download a Form or click on a link - as against making a phone call, going to the Bank website, going to a Branch of the bank.
  • Filling a Customer Security Update form: This is one of the worst "stupidity" that one can think of, but the part of the brain that says - "yes this is true" does not want to hear otherwise.
  • Psychological Target: These spammers know very well that if they included a BOLD warning, many people may be attracted to do things their way. Note how they used Capital Letters to highlight the warning. but unfortunately, Capital Letter in communication means "Shouting" or emphasis. NOTE: FAILURE CAN RESULT TO PERMANENT ACCOUNT SUSPENSION.
  • Email Signature: To further buttress the scam, the sender signed the email with a "generic word". No Bank or Financial Institution will send out such sensitive email without using a "verifiable" Name and Official Designation and even a workable phone number.

Useful Advise

Phishing Website DNS lookup
Phishing Website DNS lookup
If you receive any of such phishing emails, always use the cursor and hover around any link on the email, if its pointing to an IP address, its a clear indication of phishing in action. once you click on such links (and if you are lucky to have the McAfee Site Adviser installed in your computer, it will warn you on visiting such sites.

Do not in any way either by a return email or clicking a link, fill any form that involves disclosing your Bank security details to anyone. You Bank can never contact you in such manner and will never ask you about any "sensitive" information about your Bank account on the phone. Be wise and be Warned.

You can visit the following Links to know more about Phishing Emails or Computer Phishing as a whole.

Bank Phishing Emails
Bank Phishing Emails
This morning as I opened my emails to see what the day holds for me, my attention was drawn to one of the emails that "quietly" tried to pass through my Inbox filters but landed into the basket meant for such unscrupulous emails or senders. By this in a simple layman's understanding, the Spam Folder.

Now down to some serious things (lol). I looked at the email and the contents baffled me. You can see for yourself:
Dear Guaranty Trust Bank Customer,
We regret to inform you that access to your GTBank Online Account and Atm Card has been temporarily limited. This has been done due to several failed log-in attempts. To restore your account please log in correctly by downloading and Filling the Customer Security Update form attached to this message. After downloading follow the directions for instant activation of your account and Security information.
NOTE: FAILURE CAN RESULT TO PERMANENT ACCOUNT SUSPENSION.Security AdvisorGuaranty Trust Bank © 2012.
What baffled me was not that the senders actually wish that I will be stupid enough to open and download the form, but that in their minds, they think that everyone will fall for their trick.

This is a definite case of  email phishing or phishing email. An analysis of the email structure, contents and some tips below will help you stay clear from phishing emails.

Note of Caution

A little note of caution to anyone who has ever received such emails or who will in the future, receive such emails.
If in doubt of any contents of an kind of communication from your Bank or Financial institution, please contact the Bank directly. If you cant get their contacts, please look at the back of your ATM card, Credit Card for a Bank or Card contact Number.

Do not in any way either by a return email or clicking a link, fill any form that involves disclosing your Bank security details to anyone. You Bank can never contact you in such manner and will never ask you about any "sensitive" information about your Bank account on the phone. Be wise and be Warned.
